Tricky Kitchen Storage

The kitchen always seems like the biggest room of the home to tackle when it comes to organization, and there are plenty of oddly shaped items to figure out how to store neatly. We have compiled a list of clever hacks and unique kitchen organization ideas on how to give everything a place where it fits, and not just thrown into drawers or kitchen cabinets that could be better allocated.

Before you start- you need to prep. For this, use the check, purge, clean method. Take everything out of all of your cabinets, drawers, and pantry. (It is going to be a huge mess, but don’t worry it will get better!) Go through everything and decide if you really need all that you have.

When you have all of your pots and pans out you may find that you have two of the exact same size when you only need one. Editing your things will free up valuable storage space as well as space in your mind! Throw out any trash, or things that couldn’t be used by someone else and donate the rest! Before you put anything back in anywhere, use this as a great opportunity to clean and wipe out your drawers and cabinets.

Then, we come up with unique kitchen organization and storage solutions for your space.

Cooking Utensils

  • Hang them on the side of cabinets: Even if you lack wall space, you still probably have room to hang your utensils. You could put hooks on the sides of your cabinets, or inside the doors to easily hang tricky utensils for easy reach.

  • Set them up diagonally in a drawer: Storing long utensils diagonally makes smarter, more efficient use of prime drawer space. You can buy diagonal drawer storage dividers or you can DIY them yourself!

  • Hang them from a pot rack: Pot racks aren’t just for pots! You can add S hooks and hang just about anything. You can also buy rods that you screw to the wall or the side (or inside) of a cabinet that you can hang just about anything on. These from Ikea are a great option!

  • Use a magnetic knife strip: Ikea also has magnetic strips that you can hang up that are pretty versatile for anything that is metal in your kitchen. Use these for everything from tea strainers, peelers, ladles, whisks, knives or measuring spoons!

Bakeware

Vertical shelf dividers: These are one of our favorite unique kitchen organization ideas! They keep your flat bakeware separated by type and keep them from just being in a huge stacked mess. They allow them to stand on their side for easy access and better use of vertical storage.

Pegboards: Use pegboards in the drawers to organize smaller bakeware or baking accessories.

Pots and Pans

Drawers: Pots and pans storage drawers are all the rage. These drawers are deep to store pans stacked up and take up less space (and are cheaper) than if you got a regular cabinet with pull outs installed in them. Most of your run of the mill cabinet manufacturers will carry these.

Hooks under a cabinet shelf: Another storage alternative for pots and pans is to hang them on hooks on the underside of a shelf. This is great if you only have upper shelves to store your pots and pans and don’t have as much width storage wise as you do height.

Bulky Appliances

Pullout drawers: These are great for heavy appliances that you might not use quite as often but still want to keep near. They stay out of sight and don't get shoved into the back of the cabinet as easily.

Appliance Lift: These go in a Base Cabinet and are perfect for your Kitchen Aid. They fold away while keeping your appliance plugged in neatly. After cleaning up, you don't have to lift the heavy thing away or keep it sitting out on your counter.

Appliance garage: Appliance garages help you streamline your kitchen storage for a more polished look. By keeping small appliances behind closed doors, you reduce counter clutter and can disguise the more hardworking elements of your kitchen by giving them their own home that is still convenient for daily use.
