Keeping Your Family's Schedule on Track During Big Life Changes

March 05, 20252 min read

An unexpected job loss doesn’t just change things for the parent who was let go–it can wreak havoc on the whole family’s lives and schedule. The same goes for an unplanned move, a significant loss, or any other big life event that simply can’t be planned for.

I'll share a few tips for organizing your family calendar when a big life change occurs to keep things running smoothly…

Tip #1: Settle on One Single Location for Your Family Calendar.

Decide the format that works best for everyone. If your children are older and able to manage a digital calendar, this may be the best option to keep things up to date in real time. If that’s not realistic, opt for a wall calendar or dry-erase board in a central part of the home, like a drop zone or kitchen. This will give all family members a place to check in, make updates, and see the plan for the day.

Tip #2: Set a Rule That Everything–Yes, Everything–Must Be Included

Personal appointments, work commitments, after-school activities, part-time jobs, and events should all be added. It's so important to include everything the family needs to be aware of. This should help eliminate the dreaded "But I didn't know!" moments.

Tip #3: Establish a Weekly Family Meeting to Adjust the Calendar

Check in with everyone to see how they’re feeling about the week ahead. This is an important aspect of the calendar meeting. It allows you to re-evaluate and make adjustments if anyone is feeling overbooked or overwhelmed and will help you make decisions on the priorities of the week.

Tip #4: Be Flexible–Your First Calendar System May Not Work

Life changes can be difficult, and your first try at this may not be the last. If the first routine doesn't work, scrap it and try again. Listening to everyone’s feedback and making adjustments will help you find a system that works for the whole family.
