How to Declutter and Refresh Your Closet Seasonally

May 16, 20253 min read

Every time the weather shifts, so does the closet—and that seasonal wardrobe swap can feel like a total hassle. Digging through bins, deciding what still fits or feels right, and finding space for it all can be overwhelming. But with a few simple tips for editing, organizing, and simplifying, the process can actually feel manageable (dare we say, satisfying!).

Step #1: Safely Store Last Season’s Staples

Before storing last season’s clothes, make sure everything is clean—stains left untreated can set over time and attract pests. Fold items neatly in breathable bins or lidded containers, and for pieces that are usually hung (like coats or dresses), consider garment bags to keep them dust-free. Store everything in a cool, dry space like under the bed, a closet shelf, or even labeled bins in the basement or attic (as long as it’s not too humid).

Step #2: Unpack and Assess

When pulling out your next season’s wardrobe, start by giving everything a quick look-over—check for wear, damage, or anything that feels outdated. It’s a great time to do a mini edit before things go back into your closet. Launder items that smell stale or look a little wrinkled from storage so they’re fresh and ready to wear.

Step #3: Reset Your Closet

Before hanging up your current season’s clothes, take a few minutes to reset your closet—clear out any leftovers from the last season and wipe down shelves or rods. Organize your wardrobe in a way that fits your lifestyle, whether that’s by occasion, color, or temperature. Use sturdy or specialty hangers for items like jackets, pants, or delicate fabrics to keep them in good shape and easy to find.

Step #4: Maximize Space with Smart Folding

Hang structured pieces like blazers, dresses, and anything prone to wrinkling—fold softer items like sweaters, tees, and jeans to save space and protect fabric. In drawers, try using dividers or folding clothes upright (like the file method) so you can see everything at a glance.

Bonus tip: Do a mid-season quick check-in to re-fold, re-hang, or re-home anything that’s gone off track—it’ll make the next seasonal swap so much easier.

Step #5: Refresh Shoes and Accessories

When swapping seasonal accessories, start by storing off-season shoes in clear bins or under-bed containers—tall boots do best with boot shapers or rolled magazines inside to keep their shape. Rotate jewelry so the current season’s pieces are easy to grab, and try hanging scarves on a multi-loop hanger or hooks for a pretty, functional display. Keeping these items visible but tidy makes it way easier to actually use and enjoy them all season long.

Seasonal closet edits don’t have to be a dreaded chore—they can actually feel just as satisfying (and even fun!) as shopping, especially when you rediscover pieces you forgot you loved. It’s a great way to hit reset and feel more in control of your space.

“I cannot recommend Karen Swart and her team enough! We were in the Kansas City area for a full summer, filming “The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning,” and Karen and her team were our behind the scenes death-cleaner helpers! They helped our Death Cleaners move quickly, efficiently, and thoroughly through people’s homes - and they did it with heart. Thank you, Karen! Stay Gentle!”
