The Time Investment Behind Professional Home Organization

May 09, 20252 min read

An organized home brings a sense of calm, productivity, and mental clarity, creating a space where you can truly unwind and focus. However, achieving this takes a bit of time and patience, and in this guide, I’ll break down the realistic time and tasks to help you get there.

Step #1: The Consultation & Custom Planning

During my initial consultation, I focus on understanding your unique needs and goals for the space, as well as assessing any challenges you face. Organizing goes beyond simply decluttering; it’s about designing customized systems that will work for your lifestyle and ensuring everything has a designated place. This planning phase can take anywhere from one day to a week or two, depending on the complexity of the space and the level of detail involved.

Step #2: Decluttering & Implementation

Once the plan is in place, we move on to the implementation phase, which involves decluttering, sorting, and organizing items into the new systems we’ve designed. Key tasks like sorting through items, creating storage solutions, and labeling often remain the same across rooms or projects. This phase typically takes 1-3 days per room, depending on size and complexity, with adjustments made based on the client’s preferences and the space itself.

Step #3: Final Touches & Long-Term Maintenance

As the project wraps up, we do a final walkthrough to ensure everything is functioning smoothly, making any necessary tweaks to ensure the systems work for the client. If you are DIYing your project, try not to skip this step. This is a great opportunity to make adjustments on details you may have missed. We also offer ongoing maintenance services, which include check-ins, seasonal updates, and adjustments to keep the space organized long-term, because maintenance is key to keeping your spaces functioning long after the project is complete.

For Example: Garage Organization

Let's take a garage for example. Organizing a garage starts with a thorough assessment of the space, followed by a full declutter where everything is sorted into categories—keep, donate, sell, or toss. Next, we design and implement storage solutions like shelves, bins, and hooks to maximize the space. Garages tend to have quite a bit of stuff in them, which can make these projects more time consuming. This process typically takes at least 12 man-hours, depending on the size and level of clutter, as it involves heavy lifting, sorting through items, and ensuring everything has a designated spot for long-term organization.

A total home transformation may seem overwhelming, but with the right systems in place, it’s something that can be accomplished step by step. If you’re ready to take the first step toward a more organized home, don’t hesitate to reach out—we are here to help!

Until next time,

“I cannot recommend Karen Swart and her team enough! We were in the Kansas City area for a full summer, filming “The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning,” and Karen and her team were our behind the scenes death-cleaner helpers! They helped our Death Cleaners move quickly, efficiently, and thoroughly through people’s homes - and they did it with heart. Thank you, Karen! Stay Gentle!”
