Custom Shelving
Pull out shelving is the greatest unsung hero of our organizing times! They can take a semi-functional space and make it amazing. Many clients often feel as though pull out shelves might not be accessible to them - but they are easier to install, attain and pay for than you think! Here’s everything you need to know about pull out shelving to see if they’re right for your home.
Having Them Installed
If you are handy at all (and by that, I mean if you can use a powered screw driver) then you can install pull out shelves yourself. If you can't or just don't want to spend the time doing it, just about any handy man could do this for you in about half an hour. I recommend asking around or seeing if anyone on Facebook or Nextdoor has a recommendation of someone local you can use in case you don't have someone that could do it for you.
Where To Use Them
Pull out shelving is most often used in the kitchen, but have been popping up more and more in bathrooms and awkward closets. In the kitchen they are great for your pantry, pots and pans, and corner cabinets. Overall, they are perfect for any sort of shelving that is deep and that things can get lost in the back of.
Why Pull Out Shelves Are Better
Just in case you aren't totally sold on the idea that sliding shelves in your kitchen or bathroom can make a huge change in their efficiency, here are a few of the many advantages to installing them:
1. Saves Time: as a busy parent, you'll appreciate the time you will save making meals or getting kids (or yourself) ready being able to see everything in a single glance.
2. Storage Use: It allows for everything to have a spot and not clutter up your counter top by making those deep shelves more user friendly.
3. Easier on Your Back: You wont have to get down on your hands and knees and dig through a shelf to see what is in it, but instead can simply pull out the shelf to look at all its contents.
4. Saves Money: you'll be able to keep track of and see all of the food and bathroom products that you have on hand and wont be spending extra money on stuff you already have but have just lost track of.
Custom vs. Pre-Fabbed or DIY
Lowes, Home Depot, and The Container Store all have pre-made pull out shelving for you. The only downside to these are that they tend to be a bit bulkier and they only come in certain sizes so might not fit exactly what you are working with.
Costco does custom shelves that fit perfectly and they are cheaper than some of the other options.
Places like Shelf Genie also do custom fits that have higher quality construction and tracks.
If any of these options are out of your budget, what you want to do is get bins and/or baskets that are shallow and deep. The Container Store has a lot of really great ones like that.
This way, you create the same idea where you are pulling the bin out - you can see everything that is on that shelf and then you push it back in when you are done.

“I cannot recommend Karen Swart and her team enough! We were in the Kansas City area for a full summer, filming “The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning,” and Karen and her team were our behind the scenes death-cleaner helpers! They helped our Death Cleaners move quickly, efficiently, and thoroughly through people’s homes - and they did it with heart. Thank you, Karen! Stay Gentle!”
