Sometimes you can't put your finger on it. Why you might feel uneasy, unsettled, or down right unhappy in certain rooms of your home. If the room is cluttered and chaotic, it can make our minds feel the same way. The beginning of this new year is a perfect time to change your home and create a space that is calming and peaceful. It might be time for a clean slate and a fresh start.
Let's talk about how you can begin your organization journey…
Tip #1: Do Not Bite Off More Than You Can Chew.
Always start small. Choose a room, then choose one small area of that room. It might be a drawer or one bin. Work in 30 minute increments before taking a break. Sort like items together, throw away literal trash, and separate items you’re willing to give away.
Once that one small space is complete, you can move on to the next. Stay focused on completing each area of that first room before moving on to the next. When the room is complete, take a longer break, maybe a day or two, before choosing the next room to tackle.
Tip #2: Be Careful of Getting Stuck in The Sentimental Journey
You will come across things that bring back special memories. It's important to think practically about memorabilia. My challenge is this: "If the memory bins are just sitting in your basement year in and year out, are the items keeping your memories alive?"
Consider taking pictures of items you want to remember and printing the photos for a photo album. You are much more likely to thumb through a photo album than go to your dusty basement to dig them out. Donate the items once your photo session is complete.
Tip #3: Select an Accountability Partner to Help You
It's always good to have someone help you. Someone who will encourage and challenge but not judge while you make decisions. Maybe a spouse, a friend, or a sibling. Ask them to help you with reasoning, keeping in mind your ultimate goals for the space.
Tip #4: Reassess and Repeat
More than likely, you will not reach your final organization goals in your first attempt. Revisit a space after some time has passed. You'll be amazed at how there will still be things you kept that you now question why you did.
The reason is that some of these things will no longer feel useful or important because you hadn’t thought about them since the last time you touched them. Each time you revisit a space, your decisions will help to streamline the area, making it less cluttered and much more organized.
It's a new year. How about a newly organized home to start the year off right? Give our tips a go and see what you can do. If you still feel stuck or need some know-how to get things just the way you would like them, give us a call. We do this every day and will certainly enjoy doing it for you too.
Warmly,

“I cannot recommend Karen Swart and her team enough! We were in the Kansas City area for a full summer, filming “The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning,” and Karen and her team were our behind the scenes death-cleaner helpers! They helped our Death Cleaners move quickly, efficiently, and thoroughly through people’s homes - and they did it with heart. Thank you, Karen! Stay Gentle!”
